Chapter Nine

“Get him onto the bed!”

Ivan’s panic-filled voice pushed through Ella’s sleep as she sat up groggily. Jarek was trying to maneuver a violently struggling Leon into bed. Ivan was holding Leon’s legs as they tried to settle him alongside her. His arms were flailing in every direction as Ella pushed herself out of the way.

“What’s happened? What’s wrong with Leon?” she screeched.

They finally got Leon onto the bed. He shouted in pain, his face contorted with agony. Jarek looked frantic.

“We don’t know. It’s been about three minutes since he had the serum, but now he’s shivering and burning up all at the same time.”

Laszlo and Serena came into the room. Serena bustled about to get the fire blazing.

“Is he going to be all right?”

Ella couldn’t stop the fear in her voice as she looked at Leon thrashing about alongside her. His flushed face was covered with perspiration. Suddenly, his body arched at an almost impossible angle and Ella screamed.

Jarek grabbed Laszlo’s arm. “Do something!”

“Please, sir, it will be fine. I expected there’d be some sort of reaction when the two bloods mixed. Rozalia is going to inject him with a drug to make him more comfortable.”

Just after Laszlo spoke, Rozalia appeared in the room. She injected something into Leon’s swinging arm and took his pulse. Within three minutes he fell into a deep sleep, although he seemed to be breathing very fast and Rozalia said his heart was racing. Every few minutes he’d spasm and groan in agony.

“I don’t like this, Laszlo. You should have let me try it first.”

“With all respect, sir, you cannot put yourself at risk.”

“Laszlo’s right, Jarek.” Serena came over to him and put a hand on his shoulder. “You know he is.”

“I guess so, but that doesn’t make it any easier watching someone you love go through this. He isn’t going to die, is he?”

“This isn’t the reaction when someone is injected with pure mortal blood, sir. We are sure he will be safe.”

“He doesn’t look safe, Laszlo.”

“Sir, we did expect some sort of reaction. I must admit I didn’t think it would be this violent.”

With everyone watching over him, Leon slept restlessly, his body thrashing back and forth in his drugged sleep. At last, around nine in the morning, he began to breathe easier. Ten minutes later he woke and sat up.

“Well, that was fun.”

Jarek slapped his arm. “Fun? You asshole!” He shook his head, then grabbed Leon’s face between his hands and kissed him passionately. “You scared me.” He looked at Leon carefully. “How do you feel?”

“Fine. Don’t feel any different at all.”

He looked around the room at the worried faces that had gathered. Throwing back the blankets, he got to his feet.

“No time like the present to test this.”

“Wait!” Laszlo stepped forward and grabbed his arm. “You can’t just go outside. Plus you are going to need sunglasses. Your eyes will always be sensitive to the sunlight. On top of that, we don’t know if it’s worked.”

“Okay. Relax, Laszlo, I get the idea.
